Innovate at SA supplies pre-cut deflection head strips, also commonly referred to as deflection strips, for drylining and fit out projects in Cambridge and the surrounding area.
Innovate at SA is an offsite plasterboard cutting and preparation facility based in Elsenham, Essex. We work with drylining contractors, fit-out contractors and main contractors across the UK, preparing plasterboard components in our factory so your site team can focus on installation.
From our Innovation Centre in Elsenham, Essex, we support contractors working across Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and the wider East of England.
Our Elsenham workshop is around 35 miles from Cambridge, with deliveries typically scheduled next-day. If you need deflection head strips cut for a Cambridge construction site, send us your board and cutting schedule. We CNC-cut the strips offsite, label them by floor, zone or area, then return them ready for your team to install.
The result: less site cutting, less dust, less waste and more consistent strips. You keep your board supplier, your merchant rates and your rebates. We handle the cutting.
Delivery to Cambridge and across Cambridgeshire can be arranged, or collection from our Essex facility is available once your boards are cut.
What Innovate at SA Does
Most plasterboard components are still cut on site. That means dust, noise, wasted material, and skilled fixers spending time preparing boards instead of installing them.
Innovate at SA was set up to change that. We have been running CNC plasterboard cutting from our Elsenham workshop since 2008, and the business was founded by Tony Baccarini after 30 years in drylining. The team cuts components for contractors across the UK every week.
The components we produce include deflection head strips, shadow gap skirting, baffle boxes, ceiling coffers, column casings, bulkheads, folded plasterboard details and other bespoke cut components. If it can be prepared offsite from plasterboard, we can usually cut it.
Our Innovation Centre in Elsenham is where contractors can come and see the process in person, walk through their drawings with Tony Baccarini, and understand what is possible before committing to anything. Cambridge contractors are welcome to visit by appointment.
What Is a Deflection Head Strip?
A deflection head strip (sometimes called a deflection strip) is a cut section of plasterboard fitted at the top of a partition, between the head track and the ceiling. It allows the structure above to move under load without transferring that movement into the partition and cracking the board.
On fire-rated partitions, the deflection head detail must maintain the fire rating of the wall system. Poorly cut or inconsistent strips can create gaps that compromise fire integrity at inspection. Consistent, accurate cutting helps support the correct installation of the specified system, provided the manufacturer’s detail and inspection requirements are followed.
For full technical details on board types and deflection ranges, see our deflection head strips product page.
Why Contractors Use Offsite Cutting
Cutting deflection head strips (deflection strips) on site is slow, dusty and hard to keep consistent, particularly when programmes are tight and space is limited. Pre-cut strips take that job out of the site environment entirely.
-
- No site dust from cutting fire-rated or acoustic boards.
-
-
- Consistent accuracy on every strip, not dependent on who is cutting that day.
-
- Skilled labour freed up for fixing and finishing.
-
- Less waste, fewer offcuts, less skip space used.
-
- Strips arrive labelled by zone, floor or area, ready to distribute and install.
For contractors working to tight programmes in Cambridge and across Cambridgeshire, removing repetitive deflection strip prep from the site environment means your team spends more time installing and less time making pieces.
Board Types We Cut
You supply the board through your existing merchant and we cut it to spec. You keep your rates and rebates. We cut British Gypsum (WallBoard, FireLine, SoundBloc, CoreBoard, FireCase, DuraLine, Moisture Resistant), Siniat/GTEC (Standard, Fire, Acoustic, Moisture), Knauf (Standard, Fire Panel, Soundshield, Moisture Panel, Aquapanel) and specialist boards including Promat and plywood.
Not sure which board spec you need? Send us the partition detail and we will confirm the correct cutting dimensions before we start.
Deflection Head Strips for Cambridge and Cambridgeshire
From our Innovation Centre in Elsenham, Essex, we support contractors working across Cambridge, Cambridgeshire and the wider East of England. Our Essex facility gives Cambridge project teams access to offsite CNC cutting of deflection strips, labelling and board preparation without needing to source a local cutting operation.
Cambridge’s life sciences cluster around Addenbrooke’s, the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and the Cambridge Science Park has produced a steady programme of laboratory and research fit-outs where consistent fire-rated detailing matters. Alongside that sit university expansion projects, commercial offices and residential schemes. Drylining contractors working in the city operate under tight programmes, and restricted site access in the city centre adds to the usual challenges of managing material preparation on site.
Use Innovate at SA as an offsite cutting resource for repetitive plasterboard details. We cut the material at our facility in Essex, label it clearly, and deliver it to your Cambridge site or make it available for collection.
