Shadow Gap Detail | GRG Installation Case Study

Offsite-manufactured GRG shadow gap profiles, installed and finished on a live construction project.

There is nothing better than seeing a detail leave our workshop and then seeing how it looks once installed on site.

For this project, Innovate at SA manufactured bespoke GRG shadow gap profiles for Bespoke Construction, ready to form a clean and consistent architectural shadow line within the finished interior.

The completed photographs show the detail doing exactly what it was designed to do. A crisp, controlled shadow gap that quietly becomes part of the architecture.

From Workshop to Finished Space

The Project

Moving an awkward architectural detail away from site

Bespoke Construction required a manufactured solution for an architectural shadow gap detail.

Shadow gaps can appear relatively simple on a drawing. On site, achieving a consistent line requires accurate setting out, forming and finishing.

Small variations can quickly become visible once the surrounding surfaces are complete.

The opportunity here was to move part of that work away from site.

Innovate manufactured the GRG shadow gap components at our Elsenham workshop before delivery for installation by Bespoke Construction.

The Brief

A manufactured starting point rather than a detail formed from scratch

The brief was straightforward.

Create a consistent shadow gap detail that gave the site team a manufactured starting point rather than requiring the complete detail to be formed from scratch on site.

Crisp and controlled, the finished line also needed to integrate neatly with the surrounding construction.

Our Solution

GRG profiles formed in a controlled workshop environment

Innovate manufactured the required shadow gap detail from GRG at our offsite fabrication workshop in Elsenham.

Producing the geometry away from site meant the profiles could arrive already formed to create the required architectural detail.

That reduced the amount of forming needed during installation and gave the Bespoke Construction team a consistent component to work with.

You can see the full range on our GRG shadow gap profiles page.

“If part of a construction problem can be solved before it reaches site, why leave it for the site team to solve again?”

What We Delivered

1. Bespoke GRG shadow gap components

2. Consistent preformed geometry

3. Offsite manufacture in Elsenham

4. Components prepared for site installation

5. Profiles designed to integrate with the surrounding drylining

6. Manufactured details ready for finishing on site

The Outcome

A clean, consistent shadow line within the finished interior

The installed photographs tell the story better than we can.

Crisp, consistent and understated, the finished shadow line sits quietly within the surrounding construction.

Rather than becoming a feature in its own right, the shadow gap does exactly what a good architectural detail should do. It creates a crisp junction while allowing the surrounding finishes to remain the focus.

For us, seeing the manufactured component translated into the completed interior is particularly satisfying.

In the workshop, it is a piece of GRG. On site, it becomes part of the architecture.

Why Manufacture a Shadow Gap Detail Offsite?

A Simple Line That Is Not Simple to Make

A shadow gap can look simple when it appears as a line on a drawing. Creating that line consistently on site can involve repeated measuring, cutting, forming and finishing.

Controlled Workshop Conditions

Manufacturing the geometry offsite moves part of that process into a controlled workshop environment.

A Better Starting Point on Site

The installer still owns the installation and final finish. We simply aim to give them a better starting point, because we believe there should be fewer problems left to solve on site.

Send us the drawings and we will tell you what can be made offsite

Shadow gaps are one of those details that look simple until somebody has to make them consistently on site.

If you have an architectural shadow gap, recessed junction or unusual plasterboard detail on a current project, send us the drawings.

We can look at what can be manufactured offsite and help reduce the amount of work that needs to be created from scratch on site.

FAQs

Can shadow gap details be manufactured offsite?

Yes. Where the geometry and project requirements are suitable, shadow gap components can be manufactured away from site and delivered ready to integrate into the surrounding construction.

For this project, Innovate manufactured the shadow gap components from GRG, or Glass Reinforced Gypsum.

Offsite manufacture can reduce repetitive measuring, cutting and forming on site while providing a consistent starting geometry for the installer.

Yes. We can review project drawings and assess whether the required shadow gap or recessed detail can be manufactured as an offsite component.

Yes. Send us the relevant drawings and dimensions and we can review the detail before manufacture.
