Innovate at SA supplies pre-cut deflection head strips — also referred to as deflection strips — for drylining and fit-out projects across Ipswich and Suffolk. We’re an offsite plasterboard cutting facility based in Elsenham, Essex. Our workshop sits just off the A120, which connects directly onto the A12 — putting us closer to Ipswich than most national cutting services, with next-day delivery to most Ipswich and Suffolk sites.
We work with drylining contractors, fit-out contractors and main contractors across Suffolk and the surrounding area. You send us your board and cutting schedule. We CNC-cut the strips offsite, label them by floor, zone or area, and return them ready for your team to install.
The result: less site cutting, less dust, less waste and more consistent strips.
You keep your board supplier, your merchant rates and your rebates. We handle the cutting.
Ipswich has seen significant construction activity in recent years — from the Waterfront regeneration and town centre residential schemes to commercial fit-out along the A14 corridor and growth around the port at Felixstowe. Drylining contractors working across these projects are under real programme pressure, often on constrained sites with strict dust controls.
You keep your existing board supplier and merchant relationship. Your rates and rebates don’t change. You simply send us your board — or have it delivered directly from your merchant — along with your cutting schedule. We cut, label and return, ready to fix.
That means no dust on site, no skilled labour tied up cutting plasterboard, and no inconsistent strips creating problems at inspection. Your board. Your rates. Our cutting.
We deliver to Ipswich, Felixstowe, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, Sudbury and across Suffolk from our Elsenham, Essex workshop. Our location just off the A120 — direct onto the A12 — means we’re genuinely close to the Ipswich market. Collection from our Essex workshop is also available once your boards have been cut.
Why contractors use pre-cut deflection head strips
Pre-cut strips take one of the most repetitive site jobs away from your team. Instead of cutting board on site, creating dust, clearing offcuts and checking every strip by hand, your fixers receive labelled material ready to install. That helps with:
- Less site cutting.
- Less plasterboard dust.
- Less waste and fewer offcuts.
- Less time spent preparing material.
- Better use of skilled labour.
- More consistent strip sizes.
- Cleaner fire and acoustic details.
- Faster installation on repetitive runs.
- Easier distribution by floor, zone or area.
- Less avoidable rework from poor cuts or damaged edges.
Your team spends less time making the pieces and more time installing them.
What this helps reduce
Site cutting
Strips arrive cut. No site saws working overhead.
Dust
Cutting is contained at our workshop, not in the working area.
Waste
Board can be nested and cut more efficiently before it reaches site.
HSE pressure
Less repetitive cutting means less power tool use, less noise and fewer dusty preparation zones.
Site confusion
Strips labelled by floor, zone or area make it clearer what goes where.
Inconsistent details
Strips are cut to the drawing or schedule, not repeatedly guessed by hand.
Labour pressure
Installers fix prepared strips instead of cutting from raw sheet.
Remedials
Better prepared strips help reduce poor fit, damaged edges and rework.
The advantages
Consistent components
Reliable preparation
Betterment built in
Less waste
Less HSE pressure
Less dust
Easier to install
Time saving
Fewer remedials
The aim is simple: give your Ipswich site team a clearer, cleaner and more reliable package to install. Deflection head strips still need skilled fixing, but the cutting is done before the board reaches site.
What is a deflection head strip?
A deflection head strip is a precisely cut section of plasterboard fitted at the top of a partition wall, between the head track and the ceiling. It allows the structure above to deflect, to move naturally under load, without cracking the plasterboard below.
In multi-storey buildings, concrete frames deflect and steel structures flex. Without a properly cut deflection head, that movement transfers into the partition and cracks the board. The deflection head strip absorbs the movement and keeps the wall intact.
On fire-rated partitions, the deflection head detail must maintain the fire rating of the overall wall system. Poorly cut or inconsistent strips can create gaps that compromise fire integrity at inspection. Consistent cutting helps support the correct installation of the specified fire-rated system, provided the manufacturer’s detail, site installation and inspection requirements are followed.
For full technical details on our cutting service, board types and deflection ranges, see our deflection head strips product page.
The issue with on-site cutting
Cutting deflection head strips on site costs contractors time, labour, space and consistency. It is slow, dusty and hard to keep accurate, particularly on busy projects where space is tight and programmes are under pressure.
-
- Dust from cutting plasterboard, particularly fire-rated and acoustic boards, creates HSE compliance issues.
-
- Hand-cut strips are rarely accurate or consistent, leading to gaps that can compromise fire performance.
-
- Cutting on site takes skilled labour away from fixing and finishing.
-
- Offcuts and waste boards cost money and take up skip space.
Board types we cut
We cut deflection head strips from any standard plasterboard. You supply the board through your existing merchant, and we cut it to spec.
We regularly cut British Gypsum (WallBoard, FireLine, SoundBloc, CoreBoard, FireCase, DuraLine, Moisture Resistant), Siniat/GTEC (Standard, Fire, Acoustic, Moisture), Knauf (Standard, Fire Panel, Soundshield, Moisture Panel, Aquapanel) and specialist boards including Promat and plywood.
Not sure which board spec you need? Send us the partition detail and we will confirm the correct cutting dimensions.
Deflection head strips for Ipswich and Suffolk
Ipswich’s residential and commercial fit-out sector generates steady demand for accurate, fire-rated deflection head details. From the Waterfront development to town centre residential blocks and commercial fit-out schemes along the A14 corridor, drylining contractors in Ipswich work under tight programmes every day. Restricted site access, dust controls and programme pressure are common across most projects.
Restricted site access and dust restrictions add further pressure to most projects. For drylining contractors working across Ipswich and surrounding Suffolk districts, we cut deflection strips to spec in our factory so your fixers can focus on the install.
We deliver to Ipswich town centre, Felixstowe, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds, Stowmarket, Sudbury and across the wider Suffolk area. Our Essex workshop is connected via the A12 and A14, with deliveries scheduled to suit your programme.
